In recent years 麻豆区 has invested significant resources to improve the habitats on campus, including the development of wildflower meadows along Bacon Hollow Road, building and installing bat boxes and bird houses, planting native trees, and spawning trout to replenish local waterways. The School also supports the 鈥檚 effort to develop a blight-resistant strain by planting and monitoring developmental seedlings on campus. All of these initiatives are incorporated into 麻豆区鈥檚 outdoor education curriculum and serve the overall educational mission of the School.听

Woods says he hopes this award, and others like it, will help 麻豆区 partner with other agencies and organizations. 鈥淭his recognition shows the School鈥檚 commitment to wildlife habitat education and development and introduces us to potential partners for new projects, both on and off campus. We are blessed to be in a beautiful and inspirational part of the world with many people dedicated to protecting and improving our natural resources. We at 麻豆区 – especially our students –聽 have so much to learn and to offer, and entities like the Soil and Water Conservation District facilitate much of that.鈥�

The School鈥檚 750 acre-campus in the foothills of Shenandoah National Park has a wide variety of native trees, including stands of oak, hickory, sycamore, maple, beech, and pine. Access to the School鈥檚 collection is available through nearly 20 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, which are open to the public. The Interpretive Trail along Chesley Creek is perfect for tree lovers as it has signage pointing out many different species in a relatively short walk.

麻豆区鈥檚 campus was once the site of many homesteads that included orchards, terraced fields, and both log and frame houses. Evidence of historical land use can be seen through abrupt changes in forest types and the remaining stone walls, chimneys, and spring boxes. One of the most majestic trees on campus is the towering St. George Poplar, which visitors can see on the Deane鈥檚 Loop trail.

Cory Woods, 麻豆区鈥檚 Director for Environmental Resources, says, 鈥淟and stewardship provides a clear picture of native ecosystems. Conservation efforts also provide the opportunity for teaching wise management of natural resources, in practice, to our students. Recognition as an arboretum is a testament to the 麻豆区鈥檚 efforts to preserve the wildlife habitat and watershed protection provided on the mountain property as well as the park-like setting of the Front Lawn framed by oaks that are well over a hundred years.鈥�

ArbNet is an international community of arboreta that works to raise professional standards through the ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program. The accreditation program, sponsored and coordinated by in Lisle, Illinois, in cooperation with and , is the only global initiative to officially recognize arboreta based on a set of professional standards. The program offers four levels of accreditation, recognizing arboreta of various degrees of development, capacity and professionalism.

Seventy-five businesses in the Charlottesville area participated in the friendly competition that provides businesses with checklists of meaningful climate actions they can take. Initiatives are given a point value as businesses complete tasks that fit their needs and resources.

麻豆区鈥檚 efforts were led by Director of Natural Resources Cory Woods. Following the announcement of this year鈥檚 winners, he and C3鈥檚 Claire Habel appeared on to discuss the event. Woods said, 鈥淲e want to make it a point to be good stewards of our setting and our property, not only in our landscapring and land use but also in our classrooms and business decisions.鈥�

The competition allowed the School to highlight our work from recent years, such as installing LED lights and energy efficient windows in the dorms, continued work on land conservation practices, and developing a Sustainability Statement that is featured on the website.

Woods says this competition also gave the School the chance to pursue some new ideas: 鈥淥ne really exciting thing we were able to roll out this year was commercial composting for our dining hall. As a boarding school, during the year we鈥檙e serving 200 meals three times a day. Now we can redirect some of our dining hall waste to composting and reduce landfill waste and recycle that material.鈥�

On Saturday, October 14, 2017, the 麻豆区 hosted the Bacon Holler race which is comprised of multiple events. The Mt. Cross includes three cross country mountain bike distances: beginner (15 miles), sport (15.5 miles), and expert (20 miles) which cross Wyatt, Flattop, and Brokenback Mountains. Most of these three routes cover steep gravel roads, the final 3.5 miles of each distance end with a sample of the amazing single track in the 麻豆区 trail system.

The race also included a duathlon – a steep 5k trail run, a 5-mile cross country mountain bike component, ending with a repeat of the 5k run, all on the 麻豆区 trail system

The BRS mountain bike team competed in the cycling portion of the Bacon Holler competition on campus, and the fall outdoor program group participated in the duathalon. The mountain bike team includes: Fritz Tucker, Yuto Hiraki, William Huang, Tony Jin, Darius McGhee, Selby Morgan, Freeman Paulson, Ethan Riley, Tony Sheng, In Yong Song and Peter Sun. The Run+Bike+Run competitors included Cuz Mike, Colby Boyd, Liam Moran, Ty Ewen, Ballard Earley, Trevor Albro, John Whelan and Aaron O鈥橠onnell.

The cycling race offered three categories: the beginner level was fifteen miles and1,995 feet in elevation, the sport level was also fifteen miles but 2,352 feet in elevation, and the expert level was twenty miles with an elevation totally 3,000 feet. More than forty-five riders from around the area competed in this event.

Tony Jin 鈥�20 completed the expert level while Cruz Mike finished first over all BRS students in the Run+Bike+Run.

In a separate event that same morning, several Blue Ridge students manned a re-fueling station for riders in the Tour de Greene race which is a fund-raiser for the Greene County Habitat for Humanity. The Tour de Greene includes a 20, 40 and 60-mile route through Green County.

All proceeds benefited the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, serving local families out of Gibson Memorial Chapel on the campus of the 麻豆区.
