The NCAA鈥檚 New 鈥�5-for-5鈥� Eligibility Rule

One of the NCAA鈥檚 most significant recent changes is the adoption of the 5-for-5 eligibility model.

Previously, student-athletes had five calendar years to complete four seasons of competition after enrolling as a full-time college student. Under the new model, eligible student-athletes will have聽five years to compete in (up to) five seasons.聽 This provides additional flexibility for those who experience injuries, transfer schools, redshirt, or face other circumstances that interrupt their careers.聽 At the same time, student-athletes can be rewarded with a 5th year of eligibility if they avoid season ending injuries and are ready (physically and academically) to compete early in their career at the school.

This change reflects the realities of today鈥檚 college athletics landscape, where student-athlete pathways are increasingly individualized.

A Shift to Age-Based Eligibility

The NCAA is implementing an age-based eligibility model that will further reshape recruiting. Rather than determining eligibility solely by the date a student first enrolls in college, the new rule ties eligibility more closely to a student鈥檚 age where their 5-for-5 “clock” starts the fall after the student-athlete turns 19 (with September 1st being the cutoff date).聽 The goal is to create greater competitive balance by reducing significant age differences among college athletes.

Led by Head Coach Dale Anderson, Associate Head Coach Marvin Hatchett, and assistants Raeshad Herriott, Craig Blandford, and Jesse Schmeizer, Blue Ridge combined depth, leadership, and championship-level execution throughout the meet. Anderson鈥檚 leadership throughout the season was recognized with VISAA Coach of the Year honors, a fitting acknowledgment after guiding the Barons to a third straight state title.

The Barons were especially dominant in the hurdles, where captains Zyir Cayasso 鈥�26 and Cohen Lemcke 鈥�26 delivered unforgettable performances. Cayasso claimed the VISAA state title in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.04, while Lemcke finished runner-up in 15.47 to give Blue Ridge a commanding 1-2 finish. The duo then flipped positions in the 300-meter hurdles, as Lemcke earned the state championship in 41.19 and Cayasso followed closely behind in 41.24, once again producing a massive point total for the Barons.

Lemcke鈥檚 exceptional championship meet earned him Top Performer of the Meet honors, awarded to the athlete who scored the most points in the track events. His versatility, consistency, and leadership played a major role in securing another championship for Blue Ridge.

Blue Ridge also captured a state championship in the 4×100-meter relay, finishing in 43.67 to secure another gold medal and strengthen its lead in the team standings. The Barons added another strong relay performance in the 4×400-meter relay, placing second overall and contributing valuable points to the championship total.

Several other Barons delivered standout performances throughout the meet. Graham Buford 鈥�26 made a major impact in the field events, contributing critical points that helped separate Blue Ridge from the rest of the competition. Yariel Cruz 鈥�26, one of the program鈥檚 most consistent contributors over the past three years, also turned in a strong championship performance while continuing to showcase the experience and competitiveness that have defined this remarkable run.

The leadership of captains Lemcke, Cayasso, Michael Roman 鈥�26, Cruz, Dayo Matsinhe 鈥�26, and Maelig Mieusset 鈥�29 helped set the tone throughout the season and championship meet. Their consistency, competitiveness, and commitment to the program were instrumental in guiding the Barons to another state title.

This championship also carried historic significance for Lemcke, Matsinhe, and Cruz, who have now been part of all three consecutive VISAA state championship teams. Their careers helped establish a sustained culture of excellence that has elevated Blue Ridge track & field into one of Virginia鈥檚 premier independent school programs.

Winning one state championship is difficult. Winning three in a row requires talent, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. This year鈥檚 Barons once again proved themselves equal to that challenge, delivering another memorable performance and continuing a remarkable era for Blue Ridge athletics.

Now a standout at Duke University, Brown has emerged as one of the most dominant defensive forces in the country. The 6-foot-9 senior anchored the nation鈥檚 top-ranked defense this season, finishing with an elite 8.3 defensive box plus-minus, one of the best marks ever recorded.

鈥淢aliq Brown was the best on-ball defender in college basketball,鈥� said Angela Lento, Vice President of College Insider, Inc. 鈥淗is defensive prowess made the Blue Devils the best defensive team in the country. His intensity and toughness made him a difference maker.鈥� 聽聽

Brown鈥檚 impact shows up across every category. He recorded 68 steals on the season and led the ACC in steal percentage (5.61%), ranking second nationally. His activity and anticipation were unmatched, totaling 195 deflections, an average of 5.3 per game, and accounting for more than 32% of his team鈥檚 total.

He delivered standout performances throughout the year, including matching his career-high with five steals against both Texas Tech and rival North Carolina. Brown recorded two or more steals in 23 games this season, consistently disrupting opposing offenses.

In addition to his perimeter dominance, Brown protected the rim with authority, posting a season-high four blocks in the NCAA Tournament against St. John鈥檚. He concluded his collegiate career with 77 blocks and 198 steals.

His efforts earned him both ACC Defensive Player of the Year and Sixth Man of the Year honors, further recognition of his versatility and impact.

The Lefty Driesell Award is named in honor of legendary coach Charles 鈥淟efty鈥� Driesell, whose teams were known for their relentless defensive intensity across a Hall of Fame career spanning more than four decades.

At 麻豆区, we emphasize discipline, effort, and accountability, qualities that have clearly defined Maliq鈥檚 game at the highest level. His recognition as the nation鈥檚 top defensive player is a testament not only to his talent, but to his work ethic and commitment to excellence.

The Barons went 16-7 overall this season. Moss and assistant coach, Cassius Christie, are planning a stronger game schedule for 2025 in an effort to rank among the best high school lacrosse programs in the country. The lacrosse program at Blue Ridge started in 1969 and, while competitive, had never won a Virginia state championship.

鈥淲e knew from his experience, energy, and commitment that Coach Moss would quickly elevate our lacrosse program and help our students succeed both on and off the field,鈥� says Blue Ridge athletic director, Parker Kirwan. 鈥淭his year鈥檚 run to the state title was tremendous and the support we received from the entire school and the extended Blue Ridge community was truly incredible. We look forward to continuing a winning tradition.鈥�

Seven Blue Ridge Players Committed to Play College Ball

Seven Blue Ridge players have committed to play at the college level, including Kayle Ryan 2024 (UPenn), Sam Charboneau 2024 (Hofstra), Garrett Talkington 2024 (Christopher Newport University), Isaiah Gill 2024 (Chowan), Elijah Gill 2025 (Quinnipiac), Alex Jones Aiken 2025 (Hampton), and Brady Stangle 2025 (Air Force Academy).

A New Five-Day Boarding Option

In addition to its full-time boarding model, Blue Ridge now offers a new five-day boarding option. Blue Ridge鈥檚 five-day boarding offers students the same immersive learning benefits as seven-day boarding with the ability to return home on the weekends. This option is offered at a reduced tuition rate and is comparable to most private, independent day schools in and around Northern Virginia and other metropolitan areas. 麻豆区鈥檚 mission is to help boys achieve their potential through personalized, structured, innovative learning practices in a college-preparatory, all-boarding community. The school is located between Charlottesville, VA and Shenandoah National Park.

On Saturday, October 14, 2017, the 麻豆区 community gathered at McKenry Terrace to celebrate the successful completion of the Baron Athletic Complex.

Headmaster Trip Darrin and Associate Headmaster for External Affairs Franklin Daniels addressed the group of more than thirty alumni and friends to toast the generosity of the School’s donors, including lead gifts by:聽Jimm McKenry 鈥�82, Jimmy Crocker 鈥�72, Bobby Groves 鈥�57, George Hammond 鈥�68, Jim Arnold 鈥�68, Bill Schnauffer 鈥�65, Morgan McNeal 鈥�87 and Brooks Mindord 鈥�09 and other Alumni Council members.

The Baron Athletic Complex (BAC) has renewed and transformed 麻豆区’s athletic facilities.

Comprised of nine important facilities which were constructed in two phases, the BAC impacts literally every student on campus serving lacrosse, football, soccer, track, baseball聽and golf.

Phase One was completed in September 2015 and includes a new artificial turf playing field, a new six-lane competitive track, as well as聽new parking and public areas. This facility has聽been built on the site of the original “rock pile” football field聽adjacent to Massey Gymnasium.

Phase Two includes the Carl Frye Baseball Field, two new grass soccer fields, a golf center, parking lot, fencing and landscaping along Bacon Hollow.

Ground breaking for聽Phase One was聽March 27, 2015.

Following a history of Carl’s tenure at Blue Ridge by Headmaster Trip Darrin, Carl addressed the attendees who included alumni, former colleagues, family and friends. Carl was accompanied to the pitcher’s mound by Captain Huntley Hacker ’17 where he threw the first pitch to Amon Johnson ’20.

Carl was hired in 1969 and retired in 2012. In 1971, Blue Ridge built its first baseball field and Carl became the coach of that first team. In 1989, he was named Virginia Prep League Coach of the Year and in 1990 he took over as the School鈥檚 Athletic Director. Under his tenure as AD, the School made significant improvements to the athletic facilities. In 2014 he was named Faculty Emeritus.

Following his retirement in 2012, the School embarked on the Baron Athletic Complex campaign which raised $2.7 million and includes聽an artificial turf field, state-of-the-art track, two new soccer fields, a golf driving range and updates to the baseball field.
